2011 Eglise-Clinet

Brilliant wine, bargain price..

Château Eglise-Clinet is unquestionably one of the leading estates in Pomerol.  Since the mid 1990s this property has been part of the Pomerol elite, and is one of the finest wines of the region.

Owned by Denis Durantou, who took over in 1983, Eglise-Clinet produces between 1,000 and 1,500 cases each year.  The quality has been on an upward trajectory since he took over, and having really taken off in the mid to late 1990s, the wines have been amongst the best in Pomerol since 2005.

Eglise-Clinet

At Renaissance we are wine lovers, not stockbrokers.  We are interested in the juice.  But we have a parcel of 2011 Eglise-Clinet that, to us, seems incorrectly priced – the market appears to have this one wrong.  The simple table below demonstrates why:

2011 Eglise-Clinet – relative value

Vintage                              Score                    per six ib
2014 Eglise-Clinet             93-95                       £650
2013 Eglise-Clinet             92-94                       £600
2012 Eglise-Clinet              96                            £800
2011 Eglise-Clinet              95                            £400
2010 Eglise-Clinet              96+                        £1,250
2009 Eglise-Clinet              99+                        £1,450
2008 Eglise-Clinet              95                            £575

nb: the 2014 score is Neal Martin, 2008-2013 are Robert Parker

Consider also that 2011 Eglise-Clinet matches the Parker scores of both Pétrus (circa £6,900 per six) and Le Pin (circa £5,500 per six) and the 2011 sticks out even more as being a very, very good deal.

“With a dense ruby/purple color is followed by a pure nose of mulberries, cherry liqueur and spring flowers, but no hint of oak, this full-bodied, opulent, rich beauty exhibits impressive purity, texture, richness and length. Not as structured or tannic as Trotanoy, it moves more in the direction of the opulence and flashy, showy fruit of Hosanna and Petrus. It should drink well for 15-20 years.  95 points.”  Robert Parker
